Fundraiser Was Resounding Success!

We've raised close to $80,000 so far!!!!
The Auction raised $61,700 just in itself.
We have had many folks that have sent in checks.

My heart swarmed with pride when so many of our community came out to support this effort.

We are well on our way to our goal.

If you would like to add your donation, you can either drop it off at the San Juan EMS office or send it directly to

the Family Resource Center
PO box 1981, Friday Harbor, WA 98250

Remember to write checks to The Family Resource Center, with "Banry Fund" in the memo space.

WHAT'S NEW

The plan has congealed; a small parcel of land right next door to the current Banry residence to accomodate a small addition has been purchased.

A single story structure, large room will be built that will allow the Banry's to have a family living room that will butt up against the current master bedroom and kitchen. The bedroom also has a bathroom already that can accomodate the boys needs. This will allow wheel chair access from the boy's bedroom to the rest of the living quarters.

The addition will be built so that when it is done a common wall will be removed, so chaos will be kept to a minimum while the work is being done.

Magic Happens!

Every step of the way folks have stepped up to help and give offers of their time and energy.

A contractor on the island, who wants to stay anonymous, has gotten the plans through the first stage of approval.

The land has been surveyed and is in escrow.

Blessings Abound!

Many other carpenters and contractors have offered their services for free. Discounts have been given on lumber and supplies. The trusses were donated for free! A wonderful gift.

There is a rumor of a 24 hour, barn like raising to come soon to erect the framing and roof.

Let the festivities begin.

I am proud to be a member of this community!

March 17, 2008

To our Dear Community,

We want to update you regarding the Banry Family Fundraiser. Thanks to your generosity we have raised almost $100,000 and new plans are in the works!

A neighbor next door has offered to sell a small parcel of land to the Banry’s. This will make it possible for them to build an addition onto their existing home. One of our local contractors has volunteered his services to head up the project and is working with a local architect who is also volunteering her services. In addition have an engineer willing to donate time to the project.

We are in the initial planning stages and will keep you up to date on!

Thank you for your support,

The Banry Family Fundraisers

A quote from Rita, a Ugandan woman we know.

"I never feel more given to, than when you take from me, and understand the joy I feel in giving to you. My giving is not done to put you in debt, but to live the love I feel for you. Recieving with grace may be the greatest giving. When you give to me, I give you my recieving, when you take from me, Ifeel so given to."

As you may know, two of the four Banry children are afflicted with a genetic disorder called Mucolipidosis (ML) Type III, which
is caused by a change in the instructions that direct the way our bodies grow and develop.  Unfortunately, at the present time, there is no cure for ML. Both boys have experienced several surgeries and continued complications.  They have recently had a permanent severe loss of mobility due to their deteriorating health.  This has caused an inability to complete simple tasks without severe pain and loss of function.  They are now unable to walk without assistance and require the use of scooters and wheelchairs, but these devices do not fit inside their current home.  The boys must be carried or crawl to move about the house. This has deteriorated the quality of life for the entire family.

The Banry family lives in a two-story, 100 year old farm house on an extremely small parcel.  Contractors have found that it is not possible to remodel or expand the home to create wheelchair access.

Gordy and Deanna have become a vital fabric in our community serving as wrestling coaches, mentors, and child advocates.  Deanna has volunteered as past Purple and Gold President, the League Representative for the Friday Harbor Athletic Association and currently serves as an EMT with San Juan Island EMS.  The boys have brought a needed perspective to our community in many ways. Their lives and their hope have taught our youth and adults many important life lessons.

Almost everyone thinks of the Extreme Home Makeover show. There are two major roadblocks, time constraints and limited manpower; the show requires a minimum of 3000 people willing to volunteer. However, we are submitting an application and video. You never know.  However, to be realistic, we want to make this dream come true using our own local resources.

(You just gotta love this community!)

       THANK YOU
To all of you who are donating your time,
              You know who you are,
                   the list is too long
I would hate to miss anyone!
